Dear future Sweet Briar student,

Thank you for your interest in the Sweet Briar College Theatre Scholarship. I am really looking forward to meeting you and hearing about your experience and interest in theatre. In particular, in your essay, I'd love to hear about why you want to pursue theatre as part of your education and what you hope to accomplish at Sweet Briar.

In addition to staging classics and musicals, we focus on contemporary work and encourage our students to develop their voices as originators of new performance pieces. To that end, I encourage playwriting and performance applicants in particular to think expansively about the possibilities of theatre and performance. For technical theatre applicants, I encourage you to think about how your work in technical theatre and design might intersect with new media, engineering, or other outside fields and disciplines. For all applicants: a one page essay describing your intentions for pursuing theatre at Sweet Briar College and your prior experience in theatre.

For performance applications:
For performance applicants, a 1-3 minute video of a monologue shared through Vimeo, YouTube, or other video sharing site. It should not be a video of the applicant in a school or community production. It can be a monologue from a published play or an original piece of writing and/or performance art.

For Playwriting applications:
For playwriting applicants, a 5-10 page play.

For Technical Theatre applications:
For technical theatre applicants, a one page resume detailing the applicant's theatrical experience.

Additional information:

Theatre Scholarships are $1,500 and renewable each year based on a specific GPA
All majors are encouraged to apply
All students must be admitted to the College to be considered
